AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) – Starting in Fall of 2027 Augusta University is set to offer a Bachelor of Science in Public Health, an addition meant to open pathways for students to help solve health problems affecting the Augusta community and beyond.
Teresa Waters, AU’s Dean of the School of Public Health, said that her school already had a number of graduate programs since its inception three years ago, but they were looking to create an undergraduate program to complement them.
“Well, our school of public health is three years old,” Waters said. “And we had all graduate degrees, and those degrees had been in various parts of the university and came into the school, but we didn’t have an undergraduate degree. That was always the goal for us, and we finally got it across the finish line.”
Waters said that AU’s Public Health Program is unique because its workload is half graduate and professional, giving students internships and applied learning experiences to prepare them for the workforce.
“We expect fully a third to a half of our students to go on to graduate school or to professional school,” Waters said. “That’s a very common path for public health students. But that means at least half of them are likely to go and work in community. Community organizations, health systems, state and local government have programs supporting health. So there’s a lot of different areas where our students could be because they’re going to get a very wide set of training.”
Theophilus Gabriel, a second-year Ph.D. student studying applied health sciences, said that he appreciates the support given to him by faculty, and looks forward to mentoring undergrad students in the program.
“It’s going to be a great opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing this program,” Gabriel said. “I’ve been here for a year and all I can say is you have everything it takes here to make you a good worker in public health. We have a very good faculty that are going to help you. They are always there for us. So, like, if you need anything, if you need any assistance, if you need mentorship, the students and the faculty are always there to help.”
Though she currently only anticipates around 25 students to make up the inaugural class for the new program, Waters said that she hopes to see continued growth in coming years to help combat Augusta’s health issues such as high rates of diabetes, substance use disorder, and overdoses.
“My hope and dream is that this program will by five years be in the 200-300 range and by 10 years be over 500 students,” Waters said. “I really think that there is that much need for these graduates in our area. The students who graduate from public health programs are in high demand and the Department of Labor projects about a 20% increase in jobs in the CSRA for students graduating from this type of program.”
Waters added that her school is looking specifically for organizations to partner with that can offer students strong practical applied earning experiences that affect health.
