EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – It’s steady work at Central High School. Back in January, 14 News reported the EVSC was expanding their Academy of Science and Medicine.
Jason Woebkenberg with EVSC says progress is on schedule, and it will bring in a lot of new features, and will be a great opportunity for students.
“This project is of such scale, it’s actually going to double our capacity,“ Woebkenberg says. ”We currently serve about 250 students in the ASM program. This will allow us to serve 500 students with a real focus on science and medicine, so for any student interested in those, this truly is dedicated to that style of learning.”
Officials say the $10.6 million project will have a lot of brand new features, such as classrooms, labs, meeting spaces and a college style auditorium.
They say the new additions will better help staff run the programs and be a more effective space for all students.
“Just having new lab spaces, new meeting spaces, new classrooms, state of the art, it’s going to allow our teaching faculty to really meet the needs of these students preparing them for college and life beyond high school,“ Woebkenberg says.
Since 2015, students in the program have spent half-days in specialized science classes for hands-on learning.
It gives students the opportunity to shadow actual professionals like scientists and doctors to prepare them for real world careers.
Officials say they’ve kept up with many who’ve been in the program, and say they’ve seen a lot of success.
“We talk to students all the time who are in college or in post-college and working in this field, and they tell us that the type of learning and experiences they had here in the Academy of Science and Medicine put them ahead of their classmates in college, and that’s what we want to hear,” Woebkenberg says.
Officials say three of the new classrooms will be ready for the fall, and the full expansion is set to be completed by the spring semester.
