The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science is the #21 Best Public High School in America according to Niche’s 2027 Best School rankings. This is the second year in a row that ASMS has ranked in the Top 25 in the country.
Niche is the country’s leading college and school search platform. The prestigious 2027 Niche rankings reflect ASMS’s exceptional performance across numerous factors analyzed by Niche including academic rigor, course offerings, extracurricular activity opportunities, data from sources like the U.S. Department of Education, and input from current students, alumni, and parents.
In addition to carrying a Top 25 in America ranking for 2 years running, ASMS holds a 3-year record for the following state rankings:
#1 Best Public High School in Alabama
#1 Best High School for STEM in Alabama
#1 Best College Prep Public High School in Alabama
#1 Best Magnet High School in Alabama
These rankings matter to Alabamians because ASMS is an excellent school choice option for families, regardless of where they live in the state. Applying to America’s #21 Best Public High School is open to any Alabama 8th, 9th, or 10th grader. The State of Alabama funds the school, so there is no charge for tuition. ASMS also provides free room and board for students to live and learn on campus.
The academic legacy of ASMS dates back to 1989, situating the school in a tradition of advanced coursework in mathematics, science, and the humanities years before STEM became an official paradigm in education. ASMS hires content experts and former college professors to teach and conduct research projects with students, providing them access to in-depth, college-level learning while in high school.
Current ASMS students are excited about their school’s ranking and believe it accurately reflects the value of the education they receive from ASMS.
“ASMS has given me opportunities to explore STEM through challenging classes, hands-on experiences, and leadership opportunities like being a STEM Ambassador. These experiences have helped me discover my interests while also giving me a better idea of how I want to use STEM in my future career,” says ASMS senior Alyssa Ricks, who is from Barbour County.
“Even though the school is five hours from my home, the academics and opportunities for my future have made it worth the distance,” says junior Alton Raburn from WinstonCounty.
Alabama families with 8th, 9th, and 10th graders are invited to apply now for the 2027- 2028 school year on the school’s website. ASMS admissions officers are traveling across the state in October to host information sessions and personally talk with families who want to learn more. Families can also visit the school’s campus on Saturday, November 7 for ASMS Day.
