COLUMBIA — The University of South Carolina has submitted plans for a new science building on its downtown campus.
The state’s flagship university submitted plans for a new, five-story STEM Innovation and Research Center at the corner of South Main and Greene streets to Columbia’s Urban Design Review Commission.
University leadership initially approved a new STEM center on the site in December 2024. The plans submitted to the city are expected to be reviewed by the design commission at an Aug. 19 meeting.
Plans call for an 118,000-square-foot building adjacent to the existing Science and Technology building, containing research and innovation labs, offices and meeting spaces.

“This new innovation center aspires to accelerate USC’s STEM research capacity, foster interdisciplinary and industry collaboration, and spur innovative solutions for South Carolina’s most urgent scientific and societal challenges,” documents submitted to the city read.
The corner of South Main and Greene streets where the STEM — standing for science, technology, engineering and math — center would be built is currently occupied by a parking lot.
The new facility would tie into USC’s planned expansion along South Main, as well as a major beautification and pedestrian safety improvement plan on the road completed in 2025.
