Learning doesn't have to stop when kids leave the classroom. BaKIT Box combines baking, STEM activities, and cultural exploration to give families a hands-on way to discover flavors and lessons from around the world.
Founder Shelly Gupta joined We Are Austin's special back-to-school show to share how the kits are designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and plenty of fun in the kitchen.
BaKIT Box takes something families may already enjoy doing together and turns it into an educational experience for children ages 5 to 12.
“We're turning your kitchen into really a learning lab,” Gupta said. “We're blending global recipes with hands-on science and cultural exploration.”
Each box introduces children to different countries, cultures and flavor profiles while incorporating STEM concepts into the baking process.
Gupta said the idea was partly inspired by what she saw missing from traditional grocery store baking aisles.
“You really still see birthday cake, brownies, but all of the flavors of the world are really in the other aisles,” she said. “I thought there's really a gap there.”
The current Farm to Flavor themed bundle explores Poland, Jordan and Nigeria through three different recipes: black currant crumble bars, za'atar flatbreads and chocolate puff puff.
Along the way, kids can explore concepts including yeast and fermentation, food preservation, how cocoa is made and spices from around the world.
“You get two to three hours of learning, STEM activities, challenges in addition to the baking,” Gupta said.
Those activities are also designed to keep kids engaged during the inevitable downtime that comes with baking, including proofing and oven time.
Following a recipe can help younger children practice reading, following directions, problem-solving, and motor skills. BaKIT Box recipes are also color-coded to make it easier for kids to match ingredients with instructions.
The educational experience goes beyond traditional science and math lessons, too.
“We take STEM as the full definition, where we add art and culture and geography and language into that as well,” Gupta said.
By introducing those concepts through something approachable and familiar, Gupta hopes children will become more comfortable exploring STEM subjects as they grow.
Gupta said BaKIT Box has also been approved through the Texas Education Freedom Accounts program, allowing participating families to use eligible grant funds to purchase the educational kits.
That can make the boxes an additional resource for the curriculum for homeschooling families and other participating students.
Families who aren't part of the program can purchase kits directly online, with individual boxes and additional options available.
