The chambered nautilus may not be as famous as its octopus and squid relatives, but it’s just as remarkable. These ancient animals have survived for hundreds of millions of years, navigating the ocean with buoyant, spiral-shaped shells. Today, they face growing threats from overharvesting, habitat disruption, and a changing ocean.
Learn more about Dr. Gregory Barord’s work to raise awareness about the nautilus, its precarious future, and the research needed to help protect the species at Save the Nautilus.
Every year, Science Friday hosts Cephalopod Week, a celebration of the incredible animals that squirt ink, change colors, solve puzzles, and continue to surprise scientists. Cephalopod Week is the perfect time to explore the watery world of marine mollusks like octopuses, squids, cuttlefish, and nautiluses. Learn about our favorite smart marine invertebrates through reported stories and interactive activities for all ages on our spotlight page.
Sandy Roberts is Science Friday’s Education Program Manager, where she creates learning resources and experiences to advance STEM equity in all learning environments. Lately, she’s been playing with origami circuits and trying to perfect a gluten-free sourdough recipe.
The chambered nautilus takes center stage in a puzzle adventure game from Science Friday and Grand Gamers Guild.
A series of experiments involving fish juice, blue lights, and mazes dispels the notion that the ancient Nautilus is incapable of basic learning and memory.
