“Are you Smarter Than a Science Camper?” was held July 18th at the Hands-On Science Center (HOSC), 101 Mitchell Blvd. in Tullahoma. This one-of-a-kind 4th annual trivia competition paired eight-person company/community (adult) teams against the Hands-On Science Center’s talented, young science campers in an evening filled with laughter, teamwork, and brain-teasing challenges. It was a chance for businesses/community partners and parents to support science education while enjoying a memorable night of friendly competition.
The Science Campers, Connor, Noah, Zelda, Mason, Ashley, Blake, Willow, Bryson, Lukas, and Aubrey, range in age from 6-12 years old. Their total perfect score at this competition was 120 out of 120 points! Community partner adults who competed were teams from Amentum, Beyond New Horizons, Women in Defense, Great Lakes Cheese, Dot Foods, Lowes, Ole Shed, HOSC Board Members, Copeland Family, Sebourn Family, and parents of campers.
Executive Director of the Hands-On Science Center, Austin Sisco, attributes the campers’ success to the fun style of learning that campers experience: “At the Hands-On Science Center’s Camp Create and Innovate summer camps, learning doesn’t take a vacation. Through exciting, hands-on STEM activities, engineering challenges, creative problem-solving, and scientific exploration, campers continue building the critical thinking, math, reading, and communication skills they developed during the school year. This engaging, inquiry-based approach helps prevent the “summer slide”—the decline in academic skills that can occur during the summer months—while fostering curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning. By the time school begins again, campers return with sharpened minds, new skills, and the excitement to tackle the next school year.”
The Hands-On Science Center hosted 10 weeks of summer camp this year and is gearing up to host Fall-Break Camp, October 5-9, 2026.
