TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Indiana State University is getting an upgrade to its science labs through a new federal grant awarded by the National Institutes of Health.
The grant, worth more than $247,000, will support the university’s ability to integrate advanced instrumentation into undergraduate research and education.
Officials said the goal is to provide students with the experience of using technology relevant to contemporary scientific research.
The university plans to upgrade its nuclear magnetic resonance, or NMR, instrument. The technology is similar to an MRI, but instead of looking at the inside of a person, it looks at structural information about compounds.
The upgrade will keep the university’s hands-on, lab-based learning on the cutting edge for another 15 to 20 years.
