The University of Georgia’s Integrated Plant Sciences program is a central access point for prospective students in plant and fungal research opportunities.
In the program, students explore the research areas of over 87 faculty, performing three laboratory rotations in the fall semester, while taking a reduced core curriculum. Then students choose a thesis advisor and one of 10 participating Ph.D. programs in which to begin their research. Managed by the UGA Plant Center, the program spans three campuses—Athens, Griffin, and Tifton—and offers competitive financial assistance, mentoring, and job placement.
“You never really know what a program or a lab is going to be like until you’re there working in it every single day,” said graduate student Adam Hales, who is pursuing his degree in the Institute of Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Genomics. “It helps you to say, ‘What do I want out of my Ph.D. … or what do I want to get out of this? What am I going to have to do for the next five years.”
In the video above, learn more from faculty and students about the benefits of the program and how it has helped shape interdisciplinary research trajectories at UGA.
