MATHIS — Parents and families in Mathis ISD received a hands-on look at science and technology concepts during an annual district event in Mathis.
The district hosted its annual Science and Technology Academic Night on Sept. 23 inside the Mathis Middle School cafeteria.
The event featured 44 stations set up throughout the cafeteria, with each station demonstrating a different scientific or technological activity. Mathis ISD Superintendent Todd White estimated roughly 500 people attended.
“There’s a lot of good data that says with involved parents, kids do better in school,” White said.
White said the event is part of the district’s Parent and Family University initiative aimed at increasing parental involvement.
“What you see when you look around here is side by side you have a parent and their kids doing experiments and everything together,” White said.
White said the Science and Technology Academic Night is a crucial part of building on the district’s foundations. He described family as the primary foundation for building up the district.
“You’ll see aunts, uncles and grandparents side by side,” White said.
White noted Parent and Family University events typically feature feedback stations to gather input from attendees.
“We do this to get people out, and then we get them to give that feedback,” White said. “That’s what we use to build our district. Kids have a voice, and parents have a voice.”
