MOBILE, Ala. (NBC 15) — Students from Missouri are getting a hands-on lesson in marine science on the Gulf Coast, spending time at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab collecting sediment samples and learning how to use research equipment.
McDonald County High School students worked alongside Sea Lab scientists and University of South Alabama professor Dr. Jeffrey Krause. Krause said the experience can be a turning point for students as they consider their futures.
“I see opportunity to transform trajectories for some of these high school students,” Krause said. “I know firsthand that if you put certain students in this environment, it's going to transform them. And whether or not they go into marine science, or they choose to go into science, or even if they choose to go to college or a technical field, if this can transform their career trajectory, then I'm excited.”
The students are expected to take what they learned back home to use in science projects and in their classrooms. The partnership is giving them hands-on experience with marine research and a look at how their own streams and rivers connect to the Gulf.
