The Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics has opened enrollment for its tuition-free residential program, providing high school juniors and seniors with an opportunity to focus on STEM — science, technology, engineering and math.
Sora Svast Tokuda, a senior at OSSM, shared her aspirations for the future.
"I'm planning on going into mechanical engineering with a minor in pre-med, not o u. And ultimately, I want to be a neurosurgeon in the Air Force because I think the Air Force is super cool. And so is the brain," Tokuda said.
The school offers students the chance to live on campus and take college-style classes taught by faculty with Ph.D.s. Lauren Feil, dean of admissions at OSSM, explained the type of students the program seeks.
"We are mostly interested in students who are curious and seeking some sort of academic challenge," Feil said.
Students also gain valuable skills beyond academics, including teamwork and communication.
"It's a lot of organization and teamwork and coordination with a lot of different groups. So it's really like only my communication experience," Tokuda said.
One of the most significant aspects of OSSM is that it is entirely free for Oklahoma students. Funded by the state, the program covers tuition, meals and books. Feil highlighted the importance of providing access to students from all areas of the state.
"And so, some of those students come from rural communities, where we get to, again, kind of reinvest into those spaces where students maybe don't have the same access that students do here in Oklahoma City or Tulsa," Feil said.
To apply, students must submit essays, recommendation letters, ACT scores and other materials. Enrollment is open through March.
