SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – A Pine View Middle School student is among the top 10 finalists in the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier middle school science competition.
Aaisha Asif is developing a mussel-inspired, eco-friendly adhesive made from natural proteins and iron-based crosslinkers designed to reduce or replace conventional adhesives that release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which can contribute to air pollution and health concerns.
“I entered 3M Young Scientist Challenge because I enjoy real solutions to everyday problems taking inspiration from the world around us,” Asif said. “By studying natural adhesion systems and experimenting with different bio-based materials and crosslinking agents, I aim to create a safer, more sustainable alternative that still performs effectively across different surfaces.”
Now in its 19th year, the annual challenge is sponsored by 3M and Discovery Education. It invites students in fifth through eighth grade to develop real-world solutions using STEM. Each of the 10 finalists receives an exclusive mentorship with a 3M scientist.
Asif has been working alongside her 3M scientist mentor throughout the summer to gain hands-on experience in advancing her solution.
On Oct. 12-13, all 10 finalists will gather at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn., for the final interactive competition. Each finalist will participate in a series of live challenges before presenting their project and answering questions from a panel of judges.
One finalist will be named the grand prize winner, receiving $25,000 and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”
The 3M Young Scientist Challenge is complemented by Young Scientist Lab, a free digital resource program from 3M and Discovery Education. Teachers, students, and families can learn more at YoungScientistLab.com.
