RICHLAND, Wash. — Two Richland middle school students made the Top 300 in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, chosen from nearly 2,000 applicants nationwide, Society for Science announced.
The students are Anvi Gourihar Kulkarni of Enterprise Middle School and Suhavi Santhosh of Leona Marshall Libby Middle School. Their projects focus on plant watering and a smart glove that turns signs into sounds.
Kulkarni’s project is titled “Smart Irrigation: How Often Should You Water Your Plants?” Santhosh’s project is titled “HelpingHand: A Smart Glove Prototype Turning Signs to Sounds.”
The competition is a national STEM contest for middle school students run by Society for Science. According to the organization, students qualify by finishing in the top 10 percent of their local science fair.
Society for Science said the Top 30 finalists will be announced on Sept. 16. Those finalists will compete for more than $100,000 in awards, including a top $25,000 prize.
