Eight world-renowned artists came together for Science Museum Oklahoma’s Spin! The Art of the Modern Zoetrope.
The artists worked to reimagine one of animation’s earliest inventions, according to the museum.
The museum described a zoetrope as a 19th-century device that creates the illusion of motion through innovative use of lights, sculptures, drawings and perspective.
The use of rapid sequencing of slightly different images is considered a direct precursor to modern film, according to the museum.
Guests can experience the hands-on art experience that provides the science behind motion, perception, vision persistence and animation beginning on Aug. 1.
“Art and science work hand-in-hand to help us better understand the world around us,” said Sherry Marshall, John E. Kirkpatrick President and CEO of Science Museum Oklahoma. “Spin! The Art of the Modern Zoetrope demonstrates their inherent connection by combining creativity, technology, and scientific discovery in ways that are both beautiful and interactive.”
The exhibit is included with museum admission and will be on display through Aug. 2027.
