Stanford University is accepting applications for the 2027 Stanford Science Fellowships, a prestigious fully funded postdoctoral programme for exceptional early-career researchers pursuing fundamental experimental and theoretical research in the natural sciences. The fellowship offers outstanding scientists the opportunity to develop an independent research programme while collaborating with leading faculty across Stanford’s world-renowned research community.
Applications are open to scholars of all nationalities, with fellowships beginning between July and September 2027. Successful fellows will receive a three-year appointment, an annual stipend of $98,000, generous research funding and comprehensive professional development support.
The Stanford Science Fellowships are designed to support promising scientists with strong records of academic excellence and innovative research potential. The programme encourages ambitious interdisciplinary research that advances scientific understanding across the natural sciences while fostering collaboration between different departments and schools.
Each fellow holds a primary appointment within one of Stanford’s participating academic units, including the Doerr School of Sustainability, the School of Medicine, the School of Humanities and Sciences, or the School of Engineering. Fellows also become active members of one or more faculty research groups, benefiting from Stanford’s collaborative and intellectually diverse environment.
The programme is intended for researchers whose work addresses fundamental questions in the natural sciences rather than projects primarily focused on the social sciences.
The Stanford Science Fellowships provide substantial financial and institutional support to enable fellows to pursue independent, high-impact research.
Successful applicants will receive:
In addition to financial support, fellows participate in community-building activities, professional development programmes and mentoring opportunities throughout their appointment.
The fellowship supports research across a broad range of natural science disciplines. Applicants must select one primary research area during the application process from the following fields:
Interdisciplinary proposals are strongly encouraged, and applications may be reviewed by faculty across multiple research areas when appropriate.
Applicants must meet the following requirements by the start of the fellowship:
International applicants are fully eligible to apply. In most cases, selected fellows must qualify for a J-1 visa, although an F-1 extension may be appropriate in certain circumstances. Applicants requiring an H-1B employment visa are not eligible.
Current Stanford graduate students, Stanford postdoctoral researchers and individuals affiliated with Stanford in either paid or unpaid positions during the selection process are not eligible. Prospective postdocs beginning Stanford appointments before 1 March 2027 are also ineligible.
Applications must be submitted electronically through Academic Jobs Online (AJO) and include the following documents:
The career statement should describe the applicant’s career goals, relevant experience and how they would contribute to the Stanford Science Fellows community.
The research statement should clearly address:
Applicants are encouraged to identify and contact potential Stanford faculty hosts before applying. A fellowship cannot be awarded until at least one faculty member agrees to host the applicant.
Applications are reviewed by a committee of Stanford faculty representing departments across the natural sciences. Each application is evaluated by multiple reviewers, with interdisciplinary proposals receiving additional cross-disciplinary consideration when appropriate.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to participate in Zoom interviews, with most interviews taking place during the first two weeks of December 2026.
Selection is based on scientific excellence, originality, research potential and the applicant’s ability to contribute to Stanford’s collaborative research community.
Appointments last three years, typically beginning on 1 September 2027, although start dates of 1 July or 1 August may also be possible. Fellows are expected to submit annual progress reports, participate actively in programme activities and acknowledge Stanford Science Fellowship support in publications arising from their research.
The fellowship is awarded to support an independent research programme rather than a narrowly defined statement of work, allowing fellows substantial intellectual freedom while benefiting from Stanford’s exceptional academic resources.
All application materials, including reference letters, must be received by 11:59 PM EDT on 16 October 2026. Late applications or late recommendation letters will not be accepted.
