Students 2 Science has appointed Dan Barnett as executive director, effective Sept. 1, 2026, marking a planned leadership transition at the New Jersey nonprofit as co-founder and President Dr. Paul A. Winslow steps down after 17 years leading the organization. Winslow will remain involved as a member of the Students 2 Science Board of Trustees, where he will continue providing strategic guidance as the STEM education nonprofit enters its next phase of growth.
Barnett, who has served as Students 2 Science’s chief development officer for the past five years, succeeds one of the organization’s founders after helping shape several of its recent expansion efforts. During his tenure, he led the launch of the Career Advancement Program, supported broader program outreach, and helped oversee the opening of the Apollo Technology Center in Whippany. His background spans higher education leadership, fundraising and nonprofit growth, experience the board said positions him to lead the organization’s long-term strategy.
In his new role, Barnett will work closely with the Board of Trustees to expand Students 2 Science’s educational programs while strengthening the organization’s long-term sustainability. The appointment comes as nonprofits focused on STEM education continue to balance increasing demand for workforce development initiatives with the need to secure stable funding and deepen partnerships across education and industry.
Board Chair Karnel Walker said the trustees unanimously selected Barnett to lead the organization, citing his knowledge of Students 2 Science’s mission, programs and stakeholder relationships.
“The Board’s unanimous decision reflects our confidence that Dan is the right leader to guide Students 2 Science into its next chapter,” Walker said. “He brings a deep commitment to our mission, strong relationships with our partners and supporters, and a clear understanding of the organization’s programs, people, and growth opportunities. Building on the foundation established by Dr. Paul Winslow, Dan provides both continuity and the leadership needed to expand S2S’s impact for students and communities.”
Winslow said he is confident the organization’s leadership team is well positioned to continue advancing its mission while he transitions to a governance role on the board.
“I am excited to step aside as President of Students 2 Science and continue in a leadership role as a member of the Board of Trustees,” Winslow said. “I am proud of what we have accomplished over the past 18 years and have the utmost confidence in the operational team’s ability to drive the Mission and Vision of S2S. Every student in NJ deserves the opportunity to pursue enriching careers in STEM.”
Students 2 Science plans to recognize Winslow’s contributions during a reception on Sept. 25, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Apollo Technology Center in Whippany. Registration information will be released at a later date.
Founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on expanding access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, Students 2 Science provides hands-on learning experiences designed to encourage students to pursue STEM careers. Since 2009, the organization says it has served more than 350,000 students through virtual and in-person programming delivered in partnership with more than 200 schools, school districts, charter networks and community organizations. It operates technology centers in Whippany and Newark, New Jersey, supporting workforce development initiatives aimed at preparing students for careers in science and technology.
