RHINELANDER (WJFW) — For most students, summer is a time for fun, but that doesn’t mean they have to put a pause on learning.
Educational program Full STEAM Ahead returned to Rhinelander for its second year, running from Tuesday to Thursday at the COVAC. The free program is provided by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) and allows kids in the School District of Rhinelander to participate in hands-on activities that help develop STEM skills and creativity.
“It’s meant to increase engagement and interest overall,” said Jesse Mossholder, Assistant Teaching Professor for UWSP’s School of Education. “So, that as they progress in their K-12 experiences that STEM is an area that they’re interested in.”
Wednesday’s activity had fourth and fifth graders in the Rhinelander school district learn math concepts — like fractions through one of the most practiced sciences in the world: baking.
“That’s one of the ways that we’re incorporating math,” Mossholder said. “To make it as realistic and everyday as possible, really tangible for students.”
The activity was fun, but for a fifth grader like Eleanor Seubert, it was also useful.
“I do bake at my house and I use fractions and stuff,” she said. “Math is something that you need to learn for your future life.”
The lessons are provided by UWSP faculty and school of education students. For them, the program is greater than the sum of its parts.
“It’s really great to see just the collective joy with the students,” Mossholder said. “It’s definitely something that fills my cup.”
Baking was just one of the activities from day two of the camp. On day three, kids will participate in a product design challenge to apply the math and creativity skills they’ve learned.
