YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University’s GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology and STEM Flights, a nonprofit organization, will host Aerospace Day at Willow Run Airport on Friday, Aug. 7, at 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m The event aims to inspire local high school students interested in aviation, aerospace, engineering, STEM and skilled trades careers by providing hands-on flight experiences.
Aerospace Day gives students the opportunity to explore aviation and aerospace industries through flight experiences, career exploration, educational programs, simulators and hands-on activities. The event has grown from 10 students in its first year to more than 50 expected participants in 2026.
“Every student deserves the chance to discover a career they’re passionate about,” said Carley Walker, director of development at STEM Flights. “Aerospace Day creates that opportunity by connecting young people with the people, technology and experiences that make aviation come alive. When students can see themselves in these careers, they’re far more likely to believe they can achieve them.”
Volunteer pilot mentors from STEM Flights will provide free flight experiences and mentoring to students interested in flight training or careers in aviation.
In addition to hands-on activities, students will interact with aerospace professionals, including pilots, mechanics, engineers, military representatives, aviation students and representatives from aerospace companies.
The event is supported by Crosswinds Aviation, STEM Flights and EMU’s GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology.
