BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — West Virginia Wesleyan College hosted its first SpaceTrek Parent-Daughter Orientation at Wesley Chapel, welcoming young women and their families ahead of a two-week residential STEM program.
SpaceTrek: Space Systems Program for Young Women in Appalachia is designed for young women interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The program brings together high school juniors and seniors, as well as female college freshmen, for an immersive experience focused on space research, engineering and exploration.
During the orientation, students and their parents heard an opening welcome from WVWC President James Moore, who congratulated the participants for choosing to spend part of their summer learning about space systems and technology.
Moore also thanked the Center for STEMeXcellence at Morehead State University in Kentucky for partnering with WVWC to bring the program to campus.
“I also want to thank our sponsor and partner, TMC Technologies, for helping us so much through volunteerism for teachers and resident assistants who will stay with the students in the dorms for two weeks,” Moore said.
Participants also heard from Martina Wood, SpaceTrek instructor and program manager with TMC Technologies, who outlined the curriculum students will complete during the program.
“The first week is about hands-on learning and building small satellites,” Wood said. “It is hands-on learning and building with wireless telecommunications. Your mission is to measure the temperature of the atmosphere up to 5 kilometers in altitude.”
Wood explained that students will design a mission, build a small satellite system and collect atmospheric data using wireless communication technology. Teams will then analyze the information collected and determine how to proceed with their mission.
The second week will focus on data analysis and communication skills, with students developing presentations based on their research, observations and findings. Students will present their projects at the conclusion of the program before graduating from SpaceTrek on July 26.
Moore said hosting SpaceTrek aligns with the college’s mission of providing educational opportunities and community partnerships.
“It is a part of our mission here to reach out and partner with the community and provide learning opportunities in the summer for young people,” Moore said. “We are glad to welcome such brilliant young women to our campus to do SpaceTrek, which is an immersive science and technology experience for the students.”
The college partnered with TMC Technologies, where several WVWC alumni serve in senior management roles, to bring the program to Buckhannon. The program previously has been hosted at Morehead State University.
“Bringing talent like this to our campus is special,” Moore said. “We are called to serve students, and these young women chose to be here for two weeks in the summer instead of going to the beach or doing almost anything else. It bodes well for the students that they are so committed to science and technology, and their thirst for learning is inspiring.”
Mary Leigh Lewis is serving as the residence director for the program, helping oversee students during their stay in campus housing. Lewis, a science teacher and science department chair at Boyd County High School in Kentucky, said she became involved with SpaceTrek after her daughter participated in the program at Morehead State University in 2019.
“The influence this program had on my daughter was incredible,” Lewis said. “She applied for college a few years later, and one of the essay questions she wrote was about the most impactful event in her life. She wrote about the SpaceTrek Program.”
Lewis said her daughter, Morgan, was inspired by the program’s founder, Jenn Carter, and the connections she made with other participants.
“My daughter was amazed that June could have such a huge impact on her and connected so quickly in just two weeks through empowerment and working hard,” Lewis said. “That’s why I’m here.”
The SpaceTrek participants will complete their two-week program with a graduation ceremony July 26 on the WVWC campus.
