CHAMBERSBURG- Schools are very much back in session around the tristate and have been for some time. If educators are looking to bolster their curriculums this year, both the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and State of Maryland say there are new resources for them to dip into.
For civics education, the AOPC, or Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts, has introduced a series of new resources that educators of all age groups can use while also looking through the lens of America250!
The Pennsylvania Courts have expanded their civics education resources with new materials that help students understand how Pennsylvania’s courts developed, their place in American history and the ways they continue to shape civic life.
“Learning about Pennsylvania’s judicial legacy can help young people recognize the vital role our courts play in protecting individual rights, resolving conflicts and strengthening communities,” said Chief Justice of Pennsylvania Debra Todd. “It is our hope that these resources help make that learning experience engaging and accessible, giving students the opportunity to explore Pennsylvania’s rich history while building a stronger understanding of how our courts serve the people of the Commonwealth today.”
Designed for use in classrooms and educational outreach, the new materials give educators, judges and court staff additional tools for engaging students in conversations about Pennsylvania’s judicial branch of government and the role of the courts. They include:
These additions join a growing collection of court and civics education resources already available on the Courts’ civics education webpage – including materials previously created for the PA Supreme Court’s 300th anniversary on the History of the Court, Top 10 Interesting Facts, Important Court Cases, Early Justices and Lawyers and more.
Meanwhile, Maryland Agricultural leadership are highlighting new resources for science teachers to help inspire future farmers, researchers, and more.
Welcome to Your Watershed was designed by MDA and Maryland Public Television to bring science to life through engaging lessons on the water cycle, Chesapeake Bay watershed, and the importance of restoring and conserving Maryland’s natural resources. This multimedia collection is designed for elementary school students in grades 3-5, and middle school students in grades 6-8.
Students will explore how water cycles throughout our planet, identify factors that influence the movement of water and investigate how what happens throughout the watershed impacts the Chesapeake Bay. Supplemental enrichment activities on farming and watershed conservation are included, along with a detailed Teacher’s Guide for each lesson that aligns with national and state standards for easy curriculum integration.
Welcome to Your Watershed is available for free on Maryland Public Television’s Thinkport educational website.
